Description
Create natural bug repellent jars using citrus, rosemary, and essential oils—perfect for summer evenings outdoors.
Ingredients
To make your homemade bug repellent jars, gather the following ingredients: – 2 (8 oz) Mason jars – 1 (16 oz) Mason jar – 40 drops rosemary essential oil – 1 lemon – 2 key limes or 1 lime – 8 fresh rosemary sprigs – 3 tea light candles – 32 oz water These ingredients are easy to find and relatively inexpensive, making this project ideal for last-minute prep or regular summer use. The citrus and rosemary combination smells fresh and clean while providing effective insect-repelling properties.
Instructions
1. Slice the Citrus: Cut the lemon and limes into thin, even rounds to release their oils and add visual appeal. 2. Assemble the Small Jars: Place 3–4 slices of citrus into each 8 oz Mason jar. 3. Prepare the Large Jar: Add 4 rosemary sprigs to the 16 oz jar and 2 sprigs to each small jar. 4. Mix the Essential Oil: Combine 32 oz of water with 40 drops of rosemary essential oil. Stir thoroughly. 5. Pour the Mixture: Pour the scented water into each jar, covering the fruit and herbs, but leave space at the top. 6. Add the Tea Lights: Remove tea lights from their aluminum bases and float one in each jar. 7. Light and Enjoy: Light the candles and place the jars around your outdoor space to enjoy a glowing, bug-free atmosphere.
Notes
Keep jars away from flammable items. Refresh the water and ingredients every few days for continued effectiveness. Add peppermint oil or citronella for stronger repellent action.
